ETX-102

Carrier Ethernet Demarcation Device

RAD's ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device is installed at customer premises to transport Fast Ethernet (FE) traffic over fiber.

Part of RAD’s unique EtherAccess® portfolio, the ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device supports Ethernet private line (EPL) services with Carrier Ethernet attributes per MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum)-9 and MEF-14 specifications. It incorporates advanced Ethernet OAM features and QoS (Quality of Service) capabilities such as rate limitation and traffic prioritization per port and per service, to enable remote service provisioning and end-to-end SLA control.

The ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device delivers Ethernet traffic over the fiber Local Loop, from the customer premises to the network’s edge. This allows service providers to extend their reach using low-cost Ethernet as the access technology, not only for packet switched networks, such as Ethernet and IP/MPLS, but also for legacy backbones, such as ATM and SDH/SONET where the edge device has an Ethernet tributary access port.

The ETX-102 features Fast Ethernet SFP or UTP network ports and Fast Ethernet SFP and UTP user ports, allowing seamless Ethernet access with fiber to copper media conversion.

Carrier Ethernet services

Part of the EtherAccess® portfolio, the ETX-102 incorporates sophisticated functionalities to ensure provider control over the entire service path. Advanced diagnostics, traffic shaping and remote performance monitoring are some of the powerful tools featured by the ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device to support efficient and cost-effective management of carrier services. As a single box solution, it enables operators to provision customized Ethernet services and guarantee SLA performance without heavy investments in new equipment.

The ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device complies with MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum)-9 and MEF-14 specifications for Ethernet private line (EPL) service topology. Accordingly, it enables site-to-site connectivity while allowing the operator to distinguish between various users’ traffic, thus supporting services such as inter-office LAN connectivity, Internet access and virtual private networks (VPNs).

Supporting VLAN-unaware and VLAN-aware bridging (802.1p and 802.1Q), traffic can be dynamically mapped to different priority queues according to parameters such as ingress port number, VLAN priority, ToS or DSCP. In addition, the ETX-102 supports VLAN stacking (also known as double-tagging or Q-in-Q) mechanism, enabling transparent traffic delivery within the network.QoS attributes, such as traffic prioritization with per-port rate limitation are defined by committed information rate (CIR) and committed burst size (CBS). This maximizes bandwidth utilization and ensures efficient congestion management while meeting diverse user requirements.

Ethernet OAM

The ETX-102 provides full Ethernet OAM support, facilitating advanced diagnostics for all sections of the service path:

Ethernet link OAM based on IEEE 802.3-2005 (formerly 802.3ah), is applied to a single link such as the one between a customer location and a network. It supports link performance monitoring and remote fault indication, including remote loopback, dying gasp and retrieval of MIB parameters.

Ethernet service OAM based on IEEE 802.1ag and ITU-T Y.1731, is applied to any service path and provides fault monitoring, continuity check, non-intrusive loopback and performance measurements including Frame Delay, Frame Delay Variation (“Jitter”), Frame Loss and Availability.

In addition, ETX-102 supports out-of-service Layer-2 MAC swap loopback for non-disruptive link integrity diagnostics.

Uplink redundancy

The ETX-102 Carrier Ethernet demarcation device supports two modes of uplink redundancy to allow service resiliency on the access link with five nines (99.999%) reliability:

  • Link aggregation (1+1) based on IEEE 802.3ad
  • Dual homing (1:1), allowing ETX-102 to be connected to two different upstream devices

Management and security

The ETX-102 features flexible management capabilities, including local management via an ASCII terminal (RS-232). In addition, remote management can be performed either inband or out-of-band, using the network or user ports, while maintaining separation between management and user traffic via the use of VLANs. Advanced FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security) and diagnostic tools are provided by RADview-EMS, RAD’s carrier-class element management system, via an SNMP-based GUI.

The ETX-102 also supports a variety of configuration access channels, including Telnet, SNMP, Web server, and TFTP. Incorporated security features include Secure Shell (SSH), Web-based Secure Socket Layer (SSL), SNMPv3, and RADIUS (client authentication only).

The ETX-102 supports Syslog (RFC 3164), to enable system logs to be forwarded to the network according to pre-defined criteria.
