RAD’s TDMoIP Technology Standardised in the ITU’s New TDM over MPLS Recommendation

15 June 2004: TDM over IP (TDMoIP®) technology, developed and introduced to the market by RAD Data Communications in 1999 and implemented in its IPmux series of TDMoIP gateways and Vmux series of voice trunking gateways, has been incorporated into the ITU’s recently adopted recommendation Y.1413 for carrying TDM services over MPLS networks.
Y.1413 is one of the ITU’s Y.14xx series of recommendations that covers multiservice internetworking. The recommendation specifies TDMoIP as one of three standardised modes for supporting TDM over MPLS.
RAD is an active participant in ITU-T Study Group 13, which is also formulating a recommendation for transporting voice services over MPLS. This recommendation will enable the efficient transport of variable bit rate voice (optionally compressed), rather than constant bit rate TDM.

Industry Leader in MPLS Access

RAD has taken the industry lead in introducing support for TDM over MPLS. In August of last year, RAD announced that its products will fully support the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance’s “TDM Transport over MPLS using AAL1” Implementation Agreement (IA). Two months later, RAD became the first vendor of telecommunications access solutions to offer products that fully support the Alliance’s I.366.2 “Voice Trunking Format over MPLS” IA.
Earlier this year RAD unveiled its RJ-TDMoIP ASIC, which is being used by RAD to power the next generation of its Ethernet network termination units (E-NTUs) and TDM over MPLS (TDMoMPLS) access devices. One such device is RAD’s commercially available IR-TDMoIP gateway module, a PCI mezzanine card (PMC) designed for integration into third party products.
