RAD and TranSwitch Demonstrate Interoperability of TDMoIP-Based T1 Voice over Ethernet Provisioned UNI Service
Implementing the MEF’s Emerging Specifications, Companies Show Circuit Emulation With Traffic Management at SUPERCOMM’s SUPERDemo
22 June 2004: At SUPERDemo, which is now being held under the auspices of the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) at Supercomm 2004 in Chicago, RAD Data Communications has joined forces with TranSwitch Corporation in demonstrating circuit emulation system (CES) interoperability using TDMoIP® technology over an MEF-compliant Ethernet UNI service. The demonstration teams RAD’s IPmux-16 TDMoIP gateway with TranSwitch’s PacketTrunk-4 internetworking gateway. The demo focuses on transporting voice and T1 TDM traffic over an Ethernet UNI network, powered by TranSwitch’s scaleable Envoy family of carrier grade Ethernet controllers and aggregators, and feature advanced traffic management capabilities. These include voice prioritisation, service provisioning and the efficient and fair handling of bursty data traffic. “The TDMoIP devices used in the demo incorporate structure-aware emulation using AAL1-based encapsulation, as per the MEF’s emerging Implementation Agreement for PDH Emulation Service,” says Jacky Acoca, Business Development Manager at RAD Data Communications. “By demonstrating interoperability of TDMoIP technology for CES over metro Ethernet networks at SUPERDemo, RAD and TranSwitch are underscoring their firm commitment to jointly supporting the MEF’s standardisation efforts, which dovetail with complementary activities at the ITU-T, IETF PWE3 and ATM Forum,” Acoca adds. T1 and LAN Service over E-Line ServicesAt SUPERDemo, RAD is also conducting a separate demonstration of T1 and LAN service over E-line services. An IPmux-11 Ethernet multiservice gateway, designed for deployment at the customer premises, is being used to transport both VLAN and CES traffic over an E-Line cloud to a carrier-class Gmux-2000, a product designed for deployment at points-of-presence (POPs) and central offices. The E-Line cloud is based on equipment manufactured by other members in the MEF SUPERDemo. By assigning different VLAN tags to voice and data, the IPmux-11 illustrates how economical T1 services can be added to metropolitan Ethernet networks using a one-box solution at the customer premises. Ethernet Traffic Management ServiceAt SUPERDemo, TranSwitch is also showcasing its carrier-grade Ethernet technology found on the Envoy line of products to provide profitable triple-play services in the last-mile for Ethernet Aggregation Boxes, IP DSLAMs, CMTS and VPLS enabled Ethernet over SONET/SDH MSPP equipment. The demonstration, in conjunction with other members in the MEF SUPERDemo, showcases the ability to manage and enforce SLAs remotely over an Ethernet provisioned UNI, in addition to the comprehensive hardware and software support provided by TranSwitch with the product family to enable system vendors to rapidly accelerate their development times while significantly reducing their R&D expenses. TDMoIP DrivenDeveloped by RAD and introduced to the market in 1999, RAD’s patented TDMoIP technology transparently transports circuit switched traffic, including signaling, over the packet switched network. The IPmux-16 featured in the demo is a NEBS-compliant TDMoIP gateway with T1/E1 and T3/E3 and Ethernet user interfaces and an Ethernet network interface. PacketTrunk-4 is the first TDMoIP device introduced as a result of a strategic partnership between TranSwitch and RAD. The device is targeted to internetworking gateway applications, allowing efficient transport of TDM trunks over PSNs using TDMoIP. It is a single chip solution that incorporates robust clock recovery, encapsulation, jitter compensation, Layer 2/3/4 QoS support, and standards-based support for transport of structured and unstructured TDM signals over a PSN. PacketTrunk-4 serves as a building block for TDMoIP, TDMoMPLS or TDM-over-switched Ethernet networks.
