Metro Ethernet Forum Certifies RAD Access Solutions Compliant with Carrier Ethernet Requirements

ETX-102 and ETX-202 Intelligent Ethernet NTUs Get MEF Certification

30th May 2006: The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) has awarded its MEF 9 Ethernet certification to the ETX-102 and ETX-202 intelligent Ethernet network termination units (E-NTUs) from RAD Data Communications, confirming that the products are compliant with the MEF's carrier Ethernet standard.
"MEF 9 is an innovative service-oriented test specification that verifies that the services delivered to the subscriber at the user network interface (UNI) – the critical point at which the subscriber's and service provider's areas of responsibility meet – conform with MEF technical specifications," notes Bob Mandeville, President of Iometrix, the California-based independent laboratory that tested the ETX-102 and ETX-202 intelligent E-NTUs on behalf of the Metro Ethernet Forum. "Specifically, MEF 9 tests Ethernet virtual connection (EVC) and UNI attributes," Mandeville continues. "This saves the service provider the time and cost of in-house testing and accelerates the speed of service deployment to customers."

Certification an Acknowledgement of RAD’s Industry Leadership

"Carrier Ethernet was originally introduced for the core network, but RAD is now taking the concept to the access," notes Yacov Cazes, Director of Ethernet Product Management at RAD Data Communications. "Certification of RAD's Ethernet NTUs, therefore, is an acknowledgement of RAD's qualified Ethernet access solutions providing Carrier Ethernet attributes like Quality of Service (QoS), traffic management and protection in the access that are essential for end-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Opex minimisation."

Intelligent Demarcation Between User and Operator Networks

RAD's ETX NTUs carry Ethernet traffic over the fibre Local Loop, from the customer premises to the network's edge. Using these units, a large range of differentiated Ethernet services can be provided to the customer. The ETX-102 and ETX-202 are Network Interface Devices (NIDs), which mark an intelligent demarcation between the user and operator networks. While owned and operated by the service provider, ETX E-NTUs are located at the customer site. This approach extends the service provider's reach and control over fibre while facilitating management of differentiated services, such as interoffice LAN connectivity, Internet access and virtual private networks (VPNs), up to the customer premises.
The MEF's certification program is intended to accelerate the adoption of carrier Ethernet by helping service providers evaluate the equipment of various vendors and makes it easier to provide the key features of carrier Ethernet: rapid service creation, smooth scalability to 10 Gbps, end-to-end protection, robust service level agreements, and flexible support for voice, Internet, and multicast traffic.
