Multi-story office buildings (also known as multi-tenant units, or MTUs), like campuses and business parks, need quick and inexpensive ways of obtaining LAN and Internetaccess. MTUs, a virtually untapped market, present an opportunity for ISPs, alternative carriers and even building owners to capitalize on businesses growing need for Internet connectivity in facilities with multiple, independent users.
Offering n x 64 kbps Internet access for each user
The FCD-IP E1/T1 or Fractional E1/T1 network termination unit (NTU) enables the connection of up to 30 offices over one E1 line or 24 over one T1 line using its drop-and-insert port. Each office can be allocated n x 64 kbps bandwidth. Allocating 64 kbps (one DS0) to each office maximizes the use of the E1/T1 line and provides fast payback of line costs.
Flexible, secure connectivity
The FCD-IP enables allocating more than one DS0 to each site. This flexibility lets the alternative carrier control bandwidth and gives businesses room to grow. For MTUs that require more than one E1 or T1 line for more users or for adding bandwidth to existing networks, the Optimux-XLE1 or Optimux-XLT1 multiplexer can groom up to 16 E1 or 12 T1 lines connected to up to 480 DS0. Single IP, network address translation (NAT) and Solid Firewall features of the FCD-IP increase network security. A built-in DHCP server simplifies host configuration.
Advantages of the RAD solution
Features
Benefits
Drop-and-Insert port
- Maximizes utilization of an E1/T1 line
- Reduces the required number of ports on the access node or cross connect
- Cost-effective
Single IP
- A company needs to have only one IP address, saving costs
- Increases network security by hiding the users' real IP addresses behind one address for the entire network
- Simplifies configuration
Network address translation (NAT)
- Increases network security by hiding the users' real IP address
- Enables directing traffic to the correct user when more than one user hosts the same application (e.g., Web server)
Optional filtering
- Saves WAN resources by blocking unnecessary traffic toward the internet
Integrated firewall
- Increases network security by blocking traffic from the Internet to the local LAN
Disadvantages of alternative solutions
Alternative Solutions
Disadvantages of Alternative Solutions
All sites connect to a cross connect or router
- Requires one constly E1/T1 port for each user (compared to one port for up to 30 or 24 users, respectively)
- The same device supports the fewer users (a 30-port device can support only 30 users, compared to 480 users with the FCD-IP and Optimux)
